How to start a GPS tracking business

Starting a GPS tracking business looks simple from the outside: buy devices, install them, charge a monthly fee. In practice, anyone who tries it discovers the hardware is the easy part.

The four pieces of the business

A tracking service rests on four components, and none of them works alone.

1. The device

This is what goes into the vehicle or the asset. Some units are wired to the battery, others carry their own for assets without power, and additional sensors cover temperature, fuel or door opening. The choice depends on what you’re tracking and under what conditions, not on which unit is cheapest in the catalog.

If you’re evaluating brands and models, what’s included covers how selection works and why devices ship pre-configured.

2. Connectivity

A device without data transmits nothing. This is where the M2M SIM comes in, which is not the same as a phone SIM: it’s built for small, constant packets over years. The detail lives in connectivity.

3. The platform

This is where your customer sees the map, pulls reports and receives alerts. It’s also where you manage your customers and bill them. This is the piece that stops most people: building a tracking platform from scratch is a multi-year project, not a multi-month one.

The alternative is a white-label platform: the software already exists, you put your identity on it, and your customers never see the provider behind it.

4. Support

Devices get uninstalled, SIMs get suspended, customers call because “my truck isn’t showing up”. Without a defined support path, the business collapses in month three.

Where to start

The least painful order is the opposite of the intuitive one: first define who you’re selling to and what that person needs to see on screen. Everything else follows — what data you must capture, which device captures it, and which connectivity plan carries it.

Buying a hundred devices before you’re clear on the customer is the most common way to end up with idle inventory.
